Horse Sense for Young Women

" I'm creating the possibility of inspiring my peers that the new cool is consciousness" Holland N. age 23 Horse Sense for Young Women™ participant

Alyssa asked me to select four horses from her herd that I thought could help me with building trust. After choosing the horse, she told me to halter and lead them each one into the paddock.

The last horse I had selected was at the bottom of the field.
As I was thinking about walking down to get him, a horse name Tizzy came towards us- Alyssa saw something in Tizzy and said she believed Tizzy was actively asking to be a part of our session. Read Holland’s story

The Kids From Hill Middle School

On a frosty Saturday morning in January, I stood shivering at the end of my driveway in the drizzle as I watched the Novato Youth Center bus make its way on the mile long driveway to my front door. The bus carried 11 Latino boys and girls from Hill Middle School who are participants in the Novato Youth Center’s outreach Pregnancy Prevention Program.

Even before the bus came to a stop in my driveway, I could here the sounds of elation from inside. Listening to all the whooping and hollering you’d think these kids had just seen a rock star instead of four lambs grazing in my front yard.

Novato Youth Center

Horse Sense for Teens-at-Risk™ works with a number of local non-profit agencies during the year. The following story is an accounting of one of our workshops held on behalf of the Novato Youth Center in the summer of 2006. We have changed the name of the participant for confidentiality reasons. Berta Campos, Director of Youth Activities, submitted the report.

On the last day of my 3- day workshop in January ( and in my last activity with the horses that day), my teacher, Alyssa told me we were going to do an exercise about trust.
I was really interested; there are huge places in my life where trust has affected me deeply.
