Sheila Whitescarver received her undergraduate degree in Economics from Sonoma State University, and her Master of Arts in Economics from University of California at Santa Barbara.

After graduating, she moved to rural Colorado to a hay and cattle ranch in the Rocky Mountains, then later to the high desert plains of Durango, before coming back home to Northern California. She has worked in a variety of positions including sales and marketing in real estate, marketing professional services for a corporate law firm, serving as a senior manager for a private educational institution, and teaching business and economics in the California Community College system. Her volunteer activities have been just as wide-ranging including work in fundraising and teaching skiing for the Adaptive Sports Association in Durango, Colorado. Sheila was instinctively drawn to Medicine Horse Ranch to serve, to be a part of the healing, spiritual growth and lessons in self-awareness that are offered through horses, nature, and Alyssa’s guidance in the programs she developed in Equine Guided Education.

Handsome Cesar is the 'lead gelding' in his herd. He still has the protective instincts of a wild stallion in an undomesticated herd.

When he senses danger or uncertainty in the environment, he will bunch the mares and babies into ball of fast moving horse energy, insuring the herd stays together.

He embodies courage in action and offers himself as a valuable training partner for EGE participants to practice these virtues.

Sage is a 13 year old Mustang and 'lead mare' in her herd.

The lead mare is the ' direction setter' determining what direction to move the herd, how far they will travel and how fast they will move together.

Sage carries the 'medicine' of self-leadership insisting anyone in her company step fully into their leadership potential.

Angel has been called the 'healer' in the herd. We have noticed how she often seeks out participants who carry a deep disappointment in the heart.

Time and time again, Angel will offer herself and in doing so the gift of helping the human rebuild trust.

Of all the horses at the ranch, our white Arabian named
' Toyota' seems almost mythical at times.
He has a magicians spirit and incredible depth and wisdom. Some of our most magical moments ( with horses and humans alike) have manifested with Toyota leading the way.
Guinness is a sweet and gentle Quarter Horse. In his younger days he was a champion roping horse in Reno Nevada.

Retired from his 'glory days' he now contributes to human growth and learning as equine partner in various EGE activities at the ranch.

Bill Brown Thornton, is a 3 year old BLM mustang and youngest gelding in the herd. Billy's gift is endless curiosity and playfulness.

He loves people, often leaving his food and herd mates to be the first to greet our guests.

Tizzy is a 25 year old Appaloosa Quarter Horse. In the horse herd, her job is that of sentinel mare.. her contribution is on the periphery of things. Tizzy sees into the wide horizon

and signals the lead mare when she notices something of concern. In the EGE program, Tizzy offers her huge heart and steady encouragement to contribute the best parts of ourselves from love.

Hazel is 16 years old and a registered quarter horse. Hazel is often responsible for big smiles with her winning ways.

My favorite horse was named Sage. She was brown with a golden mane and a heart on her forehead. She is the lead mare and she is very good at leading. I felt a connection with her right away and she kind of hugged me. I could feel compassion and love and I felt like I could have a full on conversation with her and she would understand everything I said.

The experience created today was delivered with passion and excellence! I felt each individual was respected and heard. The interactions and learning's were profound yet simple. The horses were wonderful guides with Alyssa's facilitation. Thank you for your time, commitment and expertise!

It was heartwarming to see the girls connect with the horses and observe as their confidence emerged throughout the day.

Especially when Ali stated that she told her secrets to the horse and all her pain washed away. It is incredible how the horses create a nonjudgmental atmosphere that fosters self-expression and growth.

Circle of Sisters Program Director

I learned to stay focused and keep my intention clear- not only for myself but also for others around me. The horses taught me to speak with my body language- I learned that I am in charge!

I love Toyota!
